The lesson isn’t about Binance: any exchange that holds your money can pause withdrawals. On a perp DEX you trade from your wallet and money doesn’t leave it without your signature.

About Binance

What happened to Binance today?

On 29 October it suffered a security incident on its hot wallets, with an estimated impact of around $6.3B. It has paused withdrawals and says it will cover the losses from its SAFU fund.

Is it safe to keep my money on Binance?

Binance says user funds are safe and that it will cover losses from its SAFU fund. What the incident shows is that while someone else holds your money, they can pause withdrawals. On a DEX the money doesn’t leave your wallet until you sign.

How do I get my money out of Binance?

When withdrawals reopen: to your wallet (USDC on your DEX’s network) or to your bank by the methods available in your country. If you’re going to trade on a DEX, withdrawing to your wallet saves a step.

Alternatives

What is the alternative to Binance?

Two paths: another exchange, which also holds your money, or a perp DEX, where you trade from your wallet. There are 28 in our comparator; enter your trade and see which suits you.

What is the best decentralized exchange?

It depends on how you trade: the cheapest for small trades isn’t the best for large orders or for holding positions for days. That’s why the comparator prices it with your trade, not an average.

Hyperliquid or Binance?

Same perps; on Hyperliquid you trade from your wallet. Today, opening and closing $10,000 of BTC cost $9.13 on Hyperliquid (fee and slippage) versus $10 in fees on Binance. And there are 27 other DEXs to compare it with.

Are there exchanges without KYC?

Many perp DEXs are used just by logging in with a wallet. Each publishes it its own way: GMX writes that it doesn’t ask for it; Backpack writes that it does. The comparator flags it on every one that publishes it.

Before you switch

What is a CEX and what is a DEX?

A CEX is a centralized exchange: a company holds your money and matches orders. A DEX is decentralized: you trade with on-chain contracts and the money stays under your signature.

Are decentralized exchanges safe?

They remove custody risk but have their own: contract bugs, bridges between networks and your own recovery phrase. Start small and keep the phrase offline.

What wallet do I need?

An EVM-compatible wallet like MetaMask or Rabby works for most. Each DEX’s page says which ones it accepts.

How do I move money from Binance to my wallet?

On Binance: Withdraw → USDC → paste your wallet address → pick the network your DEX accepts. Test with a small amount first.
